Kwara's Groundbreaking Power Bill Passes Second Reading Amid Energy Reform Push

Date: 2025-05-14

The Kwara State Electric Power Sector Bill, 2025, sponsored by Hon. Rukayat Shittu (representing Owode/Onire State Constituency), has passed its second reading at the Kwara State House of Assembly on Tuesday.

The bill aims to repeal the outdated Kwara State Rural Electricity Board Laws of 1992 and 2006, paving the way for a modernised, decentralised electricity framework to enable independent power generation, transmission, and distribution in the state.

Hon. Rukayat Shittu, Nigeria's youngest lawmaker, led the debate on the bill's principles during Tuesday's session. She stated: "If enacted, this bill will position Kwara at the forefront of subnational energy reform in Nigeria, driving improved electricity access, economic revitalisation, and private-sector participation in the power sector."

She also described the bill, on the floor of the Assembly, as "a bold and transformative step towards energy independence, innovation, and inclusive development."

"This bill is more than just a legal reform; it's a commitment to the future of our people.
