Matriculation of First Nursing Students in Oke-Ode: Governor AbdulRazaq Hailed for Healthcare Reforms
The Kwara State College of Nursing Sciences, Oke-Ode, in Ifelodun Local Government Area (LGA), has welcomed its first cohort of students during an official matriculation ceremony. Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq was praised for his dedication to advancing education and healthcare in the state.
Hon. Sa'adatu Modibbo Kawu, Commissioner for Tertiary Education, led the commendations, highlighting the governor's transformative impact on education and healthcare. She specifically acknowledged his support for tertiary institutions, including the recruitment of healthcare staff and the upgrading of medical facilities.
Addressing the new students, Hajia Sa'adatu urged them to embrace integrity, professionalism, and compassion, as lives would depend on their care. She encouraged them to uphold the core values of their profession and commit wholeheartedly to their academic and clinical training to excel.
The Commissioner who also used the opportunity to express gratitude to parents and guardians for their support, acknowledged the host community and traditional rulers for providing a peaceful environment for the growth of the institution.
In his welcome address, the Provost of the college, Alhaji Abdquadri Lanre described the event as both historic and long overdue, stating that the matriculation of the (ND) nursing students was approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
He also affirmed that the programme had been fully accredited by both the NMCN and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
The Provost who also showered praises and encomium on Governor Abdulrazaq, whom he described as a silent achiever, humble, and visionary leader. He commended the Governor for making healthcare delivery accessible to all and for understanding that infrastructure alone, cannot deliver quality healthcare without competent health personnel.
Speaking earlier, the guest speaker of the occasion, Prof. Joel Afolayan from the Department of Nursing, University of Ilorin, delivered a thought-provoking lecture on the theme: "The Future of Nursing - Emerging Roles and Specializations".
In her remarks, the students set Coordinator, Muhammad AishatTalatu, used the occasion to welcome the students and encouraged them to approach their academic journey with the mindset of winning a race, guided by the principles of capacity, conformity and commitment.
Highlights of the programme included the symbolic capping and stripping of the matriculating students and tour of the College facilities by the Commissioner, goodwill messages and drama presentations.
The ceremony was well attended by dignitaries, including the Directors from the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Academic and Non-Academic staff of the College, parents, and well-wishers of the graduating students.
