New polling units: Ilorin Community kicks against wrong naming

Date: 2021-06-24

A call has gone to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to avoid possible misinterpretation of its activities in the creation of new polling units in the Ilorin East local government area of Kwara State The statement reads "Our attention has been drawn to the purported naming of a polling unit 'Daudu Amule Oloko-obi Open Space' in Magaji Are Ward l, Ilorin East Local Government. In as much as we support the creation of additional polling unit in our area, we must however put record straight as regards the naming of that polling unit.

"We must state without any contraction that there is no community name called AMULE Olokoobi. What is obtainable in the whole of Ilorin Emirate history is AMULE OLOMOOBA. Hence, naming a polling unit as Daudu Amule Oloko-obi open space is a total distraction.

"We wonder where Amule Oloko-obi exist before somebody could name it a polling unit. We expect INEC to consult traditional rulers and other relevant stakeholders in a particular community before it could come up with the naming of a polling unit. But the reverse is the case in the present circumstance.

"So, we call on INEC not to cancel the polling unit but name it appropriately to avoid altering the history of our community." In reaction to the statement, the Head INEC Voter Education and Publicity, Musa Adamu, advised the affected communities to come to the operation unit of the commission for a formal complaint.
