Building collapse: COREN investigates 10 engineers, refers 2 to tribunal

Following the case of incessant building collapses in the country, the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Wednesday, disclosed that it has commenced preliminary investigation into the professional misconduct of 10 engineers.

Though the council did not mention their names, they were investigated by the CORENzs investigative panel between 2019 and 2020.

The statement issued by the Registrar of the council, Engr. Prof. Joseph O. Odigure, in Abuja, listed the investigated cases to include the complaint of professional misconduct, gross negligence and incompetence by the managing director of Turecc Estate and Construction Limited, Asaba, Delta state; failure of proposed Library Building at University of Lagos; and collapsed three-storey building at Bode Area, near Molete, Ibadan, Oyo state.

It also listed the collapsed building of proposed Crystal Hotels development, Ilorin, Kwara state; collapsed two-storey building at Kano State University of Science and Technology, Wudil; collapsed gate of Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina state; collapsed building belonging to the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Plateau state; collapsed eight floor hotel building project located on Yar'Adua Drive, near Chosen Church Headquarters in new Owerri, Owerri, Imo state; collapsed formwork to the stir-case of a pedestrian bridge at Garki, Amaechi Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area, Enugu state and petition on professional misconduct by Messer ZITTS and LORDS Nigeria Limited as part of the investigated cases.

COREN disclosed that its panel established prima facie cases against the collapsed building of proposed Crystal Hotels Development, Ilorin, Kwara state, and petition on professional misconduct by Messer Turecc Estate and Construction Limited, Asaba, Delta state, stating that they had been referred to the engineering disciplinary tribunal.

It also stated that the complaint of professional misconduct, gross negligence and incompetence by Turecc Estate and Construction Limited Asaba, Delta state; failure of proposed Library Building at University of Lagos; collapsed two-storey building at Kano State University of Science and Technology, Wudil; collapsed gate of Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina state and the collapsed building belonging to Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Plateau state, were struck out.

COREN also disclosed that investigation was going on the collapsed three-storey building at Bode Area, near Molete, Ibadan, Oyo state; collapsed eight floor hotel building project located on Yar'Adua Drive, near Chosen Church Headquarters in new Owerri, Owerri, Imo state; and the collapsed formwork to the stir-case of a pedestrian bridge at Garki, Amaechi

Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area, Enugu state. "COREN in furtherance of its statutory duties has embarked on preliminary investigations into ten (10) cases of professional misconduct referred to the registered engineers', it stated.
