Don urges youths to eschew egocentrism, mediocrity

A senior lecturer at the Department of Mass Communication, University of Ilorin, Dr. Lambe Mustapha, has warned youths of the Emirate City of Ilorin against egocentrism, mediocrity and complacency, if they want a rapid development of the community.

Mustapha gave the warning recently, while delivering the keynote address during the maiden edition of the Ilorin Emirate Youths' Summit at the University Main Auditorium.

In his presentation, titled "Globalization and Development of Ilorin Emirate: A Call for Youths' Participation',he described youths as the future of the Emirate, admonishing them to participate actively in the political economy of the State and Nigeria before the elders mortgage their future.

According to him, university is opened to global participation as the world has now turned into a global village.

Mustapha also warned the youths against allowing people from another part of the world to unduly exploit and explore the available opportunities to their detriment.

The don, enjoined the youths to work hard and participate in the political economy of the country for them to develop urging them to change the slogan from Emirate for Number One to Emirate for Excellence.

In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, reaffirmed his commitment towards providing a suitable and conducive environment for students' unionism, self-actualization, teaching, research, personal development and opportunities for all to contribute to the development of humanity.

Abdulkareem, who was represented on the occasion by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Management Services, Prof. B.F. Sule, said that his administration would continue to support the Ilorin Emirate Students' Union while imploring other stakeholders not to relent in giving their supports to the leadership and activities of the association.

According to him, if the Ilorin Emirate Students were working together, sharing ideas on development and attracting the attention of the society to their needs and redirecting their energies from restiveness to productivity, the University under his administration would not hesitate to encourage, motivate and inspire them further.
