Amilegbe Residents Raise Alarm over Dumping of Refuse in Water

Date: 2012-08-30

Residents of Amilegbe Area in Ilorin East local government area of Kwara State have decried the untold hardship they face following the attitude of some residents who dump refuse into the Asa River, describing the act as worrisome.

Some concerned people who spoke with our correspondent said the indiscriminate discharging of waste into the water body causes the perennial flooding in the area, particularly for those who built their houses near the river bank.

Oba Alao, a resident lamented the attitude of some residents and passersby who frequently dump  rubbish inside the water, saying the situation was becoming unbearable.

He said that whenever it rains, the river usually overflows its bank, and consequently put the innocent residents in perpetual sorrow.

"When there is too much rain, the river will overflow its bank and what we usually experienced is that the water will enter our houses and destroyed our property.

"We want to appeal to government to come to our aid in bringing this menace under control so that our people can have peace of mind," he pleaded.

Ajogbe Adumo who also attributed the perennial flooding in the area to heavy rainfall, appealed to the government to promptly commence the dredging of the river.

He also called on government to enforce the building code to prevent people against the indiscriminate building along the river bank.

Mrs. Felicia Ashaolu also decried the incessant heavy rain, which she said, precipitated flooding in the area.
