DEMOCRACY DAY PRESS STATEMENT BY RT HON RAZAK ATUNWA

Date: 2017-05-29

Today, we celebrate the restoration of democratic rule in Nigeria after many years of military rule. This occasion affords us the opportunity to display the strength, value and benefits of a people-driven system of government. It also reminds us of our history as a nation and the need for us to jealously guard our hard-won democracy.

That Nigeria's democracy has become stronger is indisputable. Since 1999, there has been significant improvements in our democratic system. Elections have become fairer, the voice of the people have become more influential, and the leaders are becoming more people oriented. These are salient tenets of democracy globally.

As we celebrate Democracy Day, we must be mindful of the perilous pitfalls that may surreptitiously serve to undermine our democratic existence. We must discourage divisive ethnic politics. Derogation from the rule of law under whatever guise must be avoided. Corruption and its root cause must be eliminated.

Unfortunately, Nigeria today has seen a steep slide from 'meritocracy' to 'prebendalism'. This portends grave danger of discord and disharmony to our unity.

Nigeria is the most diverse nation in Africa with over 250 ethnic groups and over 400 linguistic structure. We should harness the strength in our diversity. We should play to our varying ability and capacity. We should emphasise that which binds us together rather than that which divides us. We should be our brother's keeper. We should value and guard our unity. We must ensure an enduring spirit on one Nigeria.

Happy Democracy Day Nigerians!

Signed Rt Hon Razak Atunwa
