Kwara takes campaign against drug abuse to schools

Date: 2017-04-10

CHAIRMAN, Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board, KWSUBEB, Alhaji Ladi Hassan, has expressed the readiness of the board to take the campaign against drug abuse to schools across the 16 local government areas.

Hassan, who spoke at the 2017 National Anti Drug Abuse Sensitisation Programme at the work place held in Ilorin, at the weekend, said during the campaign, students will be cautioned and advised against the use and abuse of drugs and urged parents to constantly monitor their children.

Represented by a Permanent Member in the Board, Alhaji Abdulwahab Bolakale Lawal, Hassan urged the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, to double its efforts in ensuring that everybody is adequately informed about the danger of drug abuse.

In his lecture, the State Principal Staff Officer, NDLEA, Mr Oluwi Friday, disclosed that "those involved in drug abuse are likely to die young".

Friday also mentioned that there are over 500 chemical substances present in Indian hemp also known as cannabis that are dangerous to the human health. He said all drugs are poisonous, adding that "this is the reason why drug manufacturers proscribe to us on how to use certain drugs so that one will not fall victim of drug abuse.

Many have developed mental disorderliness, many have died and many are not useful to their families and society because of their involvement with drugs. "

"This are the reasons why we should all have a rethink, we should see ourselves as our brothers' keepers and we should at all times collaborate with NDLEA in its fight against drug abuse".

In her address, a NDLEA officer, Mrs Roseline Aina, noted that many people get involved in drug abuse because of depression, family problem, unemployment, academic challenge, economic challenge among others, explaining that drug abuse or any related act is not the solution to depression and its challenges.
