NCC Board: I have no hands in Yissa's rejection - Saraki
Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has dismissed allegation of a former Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Pastor Benjamin Yissa, claiming that he (Saraki) was responsible for his rejection as a nominee into the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Board.
Yissa had accused the Senate President of being behind the disqualification of his nomination as a non-executive commissioner of the NCC by the Senate.
Saraki, who spoke through his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu, said he could not singlehandedly take a decision or override the decision of the Senate.
“No nominee will be rejected if the majority does not support his rejection. In any case, there was a reason given for the rejection of this particular nominee,” Olaniyonu said.
Speaking during a media briefing in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital on Saturday, Yissa claimed that some of Saraki’s loyalists had already told him that since his nomination was not from Saraki, he would be rejected by the Senate.
Yissa also stressed that, despite being a professional nurse, a certified graduate of social policy and planning, and having been a former Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly for four years, he was experienced in public service and administration.
He said, “They said that Saraki would oppose my nomination because he did not nominate me. I was not disqualified because of experience, but because I am not in line politically with the Senate President.”
TheBrief recalls that Senate on Thursday voted against the confirmation of Mr. Aliyu Saidu Abubakar from Bauchi State and Pastor Benjamin Yissa from Kwara State, but confirmed the nomination of Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye as Chairman of the NCC Governing board.
The Senate also confirmed Mr. Sunday Dare (South-West), Senator Ifeanyi Ararume (South-east), Mr. Clement Omeiza Baiye (North-Central), and Chief Okoi Ofem Obono-Obla((South-south) as Non-Executive Commissioners of the NCC.
