High rate of infant mortality unacceptable - Saraki

Date: 2016-09-19

The Nigeria's Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, has raised the alarm over the current ratio 1-15 infant mortality rate in the country noting that such situation is too high and unacceptable to the people of the country.

Saraki gave this indication at the weekend in Ilorin while speaking at the commissioning of the Mogaji Ngeri Basic Health Centre comprehensively renovated by a member representing Ilorin Central Constituency in the Kwara State House of Assembly, Hajia Segilola AbdulKadir.

He was represented at the event by the former Majority Leader of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Alh Kayode Omotoshe insisting that the trend could be reversed if all tiers of government, corporate organisations and wealthy individuals were committed to effective primary healthcare delivery, saying that America attained ratio 1-250 Child Mortality rate due to political-will by the American Government.

In his remark, the State Governor, Alh AbdulFatah Ahmed described primary healthcare as a bedrock of effective healthcare delivery.

The Governor represented by the State Commissioner for Health Alh Atolagbe Alege said it was in realisation of this that he appointed Executive Secretary for primary healthcare service in the state and stressed the need for adequate support for the primary healthcare health sector to check infant mortality rate.

He then praised Hon Segilola Abdul Kadir for her commitment towards improving the well-being of the people of her constituency.
