Kwara Education Sector Gets Aided By Bishop
The Principal of Government Secondary School, Omu Aran, Kwara, Mr Segun Abifarin, says popular Christian cleric, Bishop David Oyedepo, is paying 20 teachers N40,000 each monthly to support the education sector.
Abifarin disclosed this on Saturday in Ilorin during the reunion of the 1981 set of the school's graduates. He said Oyedepo, the President of Living Faith Church also known as Winners Chapel, was paying five teachers each in four community schools in Omu Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area of the state.
The principal said Oyedepo believes that government alone could not do everything for its citizenry and enjoined private individuals to support the education sector. Abifarin said the school was presently under staffed and needed more teachers in core subjects.
"We need encouragement in the area of academic competitions, the students need exposure academically for competitions, likewise the teachers. "The students who are doing well need encouragement in form of scholarships and awards, " Abifarin added.
The principal, who is also an old student of the school, said the institution was known for sports which his team had encouraged. Earlier in his address, the Chairman of the set, Mr Saka Azimazi, said the forum was important as it was meant to evolve strategies to give back to the set's alma mater.
He said the group had designed an appropriate template for improving their alma mater through renovation of some blocks of classrooms and equipping them with modern technology. "It is important that we agree on what we can do to ensure the excellence we enjoyed at GSS remains or indeed improved upon.
"We should project programmes and ideas that will cost little but have lasting impact. I have no doubt in my mind that we are capable of doing this, " Azimazi said. Highlight of the occasion was the display of slides of the dilapidated structures of the school.
