OPINION: Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed's Government of Continuity. By Adekunle Oyedepo

Date: 2016-06-29

If there is any policy to be embraced by any government in Nigeria, it should be the government of continuity. Regardless of the political party that emerges as the winner of an election, if the primary objective of the representative is to create a better state or nation, then embracing continuity should be welcomed.

This is why I admire and appreciate the continuity agenda adopted by Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed first-term administration. The governor upon assumption in office in 2011 assured that he would continue and complete all the projects he inherited from his predecessor, Dr. Bukola Saraki, which he has done.

Personally, I feel this is commendable looking at the amount of money that could have been wasted if those inherited projects were abandoned.

At this present time, it is important for us in Kwara state to understand the true concept of continuity, and appreciate a man that has chosen to walk this path. Have you ever imagined what developed countries possess that we lack? Trust me, government of continuity is one. Government ought to be continuum; successive governments must complete or sustain the laudable projects and programmes of their preceding government.

It has been usual a practise in Nigeria for every new government that emerges to abandon projects commenced by its predecessor, then setting out on establishing new projects just so that they can have something attributed to their names. What then happens to the abandoned projects? On the physical appearance, what we see is an abandoned project, but it is pertinent to know that it goes beyond that abandoned blocks of building or roads we see.

Abandoned and uncompleted projects amount to waste of funds, which is completely obnoxious. For every project that has been awarded, a reasonable amount of fund has been channelled towards its execution, so when it is abandoned, then automatically the amount that has been disbursed on the project becomes a waste.

Similarly, neglecting inherited projects also leads to job loss for the people who are in charge of the construction of such projects. This is not what we need at this crucial moment of economic crunch, or at any time whatsoever. It is only wise for a new government to take up any project that is on-going to completion and sustain an existing initiative.

Governor Ahmed administration's continuity agenda should be appreciated. Certainly, we cannot undermine the benefits or successes of the continuity agenda of the Ahmed's administration. The governor sustained the legacy of his predecessor who started in the construction of the International Aviation College, Ilorin. Just of recent, Governor Ahmed flagged off helicopter training at the institution, which has further repositioned Kwara as an aviation hub in the country. The coming of IAC has created jobs for quite a number of people, and the school has also produced professional pilots for the country's aviation industry.

Additionally, we cannot overlook the significant number of people that have benefited from the services of the Harmony Advanced Diagnostic Centre. How about the successes recorded in the Community Health Insurance Scheme that recently got an international recognition in the UK?

I strongly believe when the Ajase-Ipo Vocational Centre is fully equipped and become operational, it would provide quality entrepreneurship training for several youths from within and outside the State. This will surely get our youths out of the shell of idleness due to unemployment.

We should understand that development is a process, and such process is a gradual one if an excellent result is to be achieved. We should refrain from criticising the Government at all time, but instead bring in our quota by coming up with ideas that can further propel Kwara State to a greater height. I believe if we all come together as one, we will definitely achieve more positive result in developing our great state.
