How to fight insecurity, by Smith, ex-lawmaker
A FORMER Inspector General of Police (IGP), Alhaji Musiliu Smith, at the weekend canvassed more funding for the Nigeria Police and other security agencies in the country.
He believed that the move would assist the Federal Government to fight security challenges facing the country.
Also, a former member of the House of Representatives, Nnamdi Njoku, has identified how the Nigeria Police could be made more manageable and effective. .
Smith spoke with reporters in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, on the state of the nation.
According to him, "such support from the government in terms of adequate financial motivation, training of security personnel and purchase of up-to-date equipment, would enable security operatives to prepare adequately for any security challenge."
He canvassed accountability on the part of political and operational heads of the various security outfits in the country, stressing that when they were up and doing, it would be better for the nation.
He praised the efforts of the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), for what he described as a good step in dialoguing with the Boko Haram.
He added that identifying their ring leaders and understanding their grievance with the government would go a long way in resolving security challenges the nation was facing.
Reacting to the development in the House of Representatives between Alhaji Farouk Lawan and a businessman, Femi Otedola, the former Inspector General of Police described it as embarrassing to the nation and said Nigerians should allow the law to take its cause.
Njoku, who represented Bende Constituency in Abia State from 1999 to 2003, told The Guardian in Aba at the weekend that there should be a system whereby there would no longer be one Inspector General Of Police (IGP) for the country rather, each of the six zones and Abuja would have different police chiefs.
He noted: "There will be North-East, North-Central, North-West, South -East, South-South, South-West and Abuja Police Forces that will all be funded by the Federal Government and over-sighted by the Ministry/Minster of Police Affairs. Each will have an IGP, DIG, AIG, Commissioners, DPOs, among others, and distinct uniforms."
