EFCC Should Investigate APC's Campaign Funds - Ex-Minister

Date: 2016-05-11

Former minister of National Planning, Professor Abubakar Sulaiman, has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate how the All Progressives Congress (APC) sourced its campaign funds for the 2015 general elections.

Speaking with newsmen at the weekend in Abuja, Sulaiman said members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were being "witch-hunted, ?charged and persecuted" for taking delivery of campaign funds for their party, while their counterparts in the APC were being treated as heroes. He said the funds used by the PDP were not sourced from government coffers but from individuals and corporate organisations.

He alleged that a chunk of the money from the APC controlled states was used to finance the party's campaigns. Suleiman said in return, APC leaders who played critical roles ahead of the 2015 elections have been rewarded with lofty appointments.

He said: "Corruption is satanic and must be fought. If the authorities claimed that the PDP campaign funds came from oil barons and believe the oil barons stole the money, they should go after them.

"The APC must have spent billions of naira for their campaigns. They should also be probed. Their money also passed through the various banks if they claim ours was from the CBN. The APC campaign fund was coming from the various states. Can they say Rivers, Lagos, Kwara, Kano did not donate billions of naira for their campaign? Did they run their campaigns with tables and stones? This is unfair.

"What should be done is that those who stole money should be investigated, and if found guilty, they should be jailed," he said.
