2,000 ghost workers discovered in Kwara
The Kwara State Government has said that it discovered about 2,000 ghost workers in its workforce.
Commissioner for Information and Communications, Tunji Moronfoye and his colleague in the Ministry of Local Government, Alhaji Isa Bawa, stated this after the state executive council meeting in Ilorin.
According to Bawa, a biometric exercise embarked upon by the government earlier this year exposed about 1, 548 ghost teachers and 443 ghost local government officials.
Bawa said of the 36,000 local government employees in the state, only 34, 000 came for the bio-metric exercise, saying 29 of those captured were even found to be minors.
He said that he was in one of the local governments during the exercise when a blind man came for the screening.
According to him, the blind man claimed that he was employed as a driver in the council.
The commissioner said some people also drove into the council in hired bus from Lagos to attend the bio-metric exercise, noting that absenteeism and truancy had bedeviled the state civil service.
Bawa, however, said that recruitment into the Local Government Service Commission and State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB) had been suspended.
The commissioner said that the suspension would be lifted after the committee put in place to review activities of the two commissions submitted its reports.
