Economist calls for enabling environment on taxation in Kwara

Date: 2016-02-15

An economist and former Accountant General of Kwara State, Alhaji Tunde Ahmed Abdulkareem has enjoined the State Government to create an enabling environment for citizens of the state to earn taxable income to meet up with the tax system of the present administration.

Alhaji Abdulareem expressed this view in Ilorin ,the state capital while answering questions on a Radio Kwara personality programme ,Playing Host.

He observed that the people who are taxed mostly are civil servants who pay through Pay As You Earn PAYE and therefore urged the State Revenue Internal Service to monitor other sectors and collect the taxes meant for the coffers of the state government promptly.

The former Accountant General observed that the new system of tax collection is the governments legitimate right to levy citizens or groups to collect taxes adding that it would go along way to block loopholes of tax invaders .

Alhaji Abdulkareem also described the Treasury Single Account TSA introduced by the Federal Government as a good and welcome development but, however ,recalled that the TSA is not new in the country stressing that in the past ,all revenues collected and arc rude by the various governments were paid into the state treasuries but that the coming of subsequent military regimes changed the system of revenue collection and income payable to states.

According to him, before now, all revenues and income of the federal and state governments were directly under the supervision of the Accountant General of the federation or that of the State as no agency then had powers to spend government funds and said it was in the right direction that the government had reverted to the former system of single treasury.

Reacting to the present war against corruption being fought by the present administration under President Muhammadu Buhari ,the former Accountant General lamented that corruption had eaten so deep into the fabrics of the society and urged the President to carry all Nigerians particularly the legislature ,the judiciary and the media along in the present struggle while other sectors apart from the public sector should also be looked into.

Alhaji Abdulareem who is also a member of the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union IEDPU,commended the leadership of the union under Alhaji AbdulHamid Adi and appealed to all sons and daughters of the emirate to join hands and further empower the unemployed youths so as to reduce unemployment and crime in the state capital.
