10 NYSC members win awards in Kwara
A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Kehinde Dawodu, who constructed a Corpers' Lodge in a community where he served, and nine other corps members of 2011 Batch 'B' in Kwara State, were on Thursday presented with state honour awards for distinguishing themselves in community development service projects.
They were honoured at the passing out parade of their batch held at the state metropolitan square in Ilorin
Dawodu, who emerged the best in the batch, constructed a four-room Corpers' Lodge at Kosumonu, the community where he served in Edu LGA, from his allowance and assistance from the council authority, the community as well as Kosumonu Elite Group.
The corps member, who said he was the first to be posted to the Kosumonu community, added that there was no Corpers' Lodge prior to his posting to the community.
He said he realised that it is better for all the corps members in Kosumonu to stay together under one roof most especially for security purpose, adding that, "the project was not to benefit the present set of corps members, but future set".
Among the other honoree corps members, Kassim Mustapha established skill acquisition centre and Information Communication Technology (ICT) centre at Chikanda in Baruten LGA, while Samson Akanimo constructed a six-room modern toilet and two urinary in Iloffa Grammar School, Oke Ero LGA,
Mustapha, who stated that he felt the need of his community and the need to do something about it, said that he realised that the youth of Chikanda needed to be useful to themselves and the nation by engaging in productive activities.
He said the skills acquisition training centre would enable the youth to be trained in the arts of making of local attire (adire), candle, soap, vaseline and beads.
Akanimo said the toilet was a pressing need to the school, adding that the project was done at no cost to the school.
She said the project had helped in keeping the sanitary condition of the school in excellent shape.
