Kwara: 30 percent students get pregnant before SSCE - Principals
Over 30 percent of girls in secondary schools within Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State have been reportedly engaged in sexual intercourse and get pregnant before their Senior School Certificate examination.
This revelation was revealed by Principals of Secondary Schools and Practising Schools Councilors who assembled in Omu-Aran,the headquarters of Irepodun Local Government of Kwara State during the 2015 trilateral counseling day programme.
While speaking at the ceremony, the Principal of Omu-Aran High School, Elder Bidemi Olawuyi, who was represented by Pastor Daniel Oluwafemi Abidoye disclosed that their experience shown that many young girls within Omu-Aran axis could not sat for their final year WAEC and NECO because of earlier pregnant.
He noted that if there were School Counsellors across schools within Irepodun local government, some of these young girls would better face their studies than involved in unprotected sexual intercourse.
Olawuyi who disclosed that a female student of his school could not sat for her SSCE examination due to pregnancy said governments at all level need to recognise School Counselors and posted them across schools in the country.
While collaborating Olawuyi experience, a Principal of Ogbo Grammar School,Omu-Aran,Comrade A.O.P Adekeye said many young girls who are to face their studies do get pregnant and their future career were put into jeopardy.
He added that apart from school girls, some school boys involved in hooliganism, cultism and even beat up Vice-Principal of the school who were trying to correct them with charm and weapons.
Other Principals and Councilors from many schools across Irepodun Local Government Area of the state canvases for deployment of School Councilors in all Secondary within Kwara state and Nigeria stressing that the rate of social vices continue to spread among secondary school girls and boys.
Earlier, the Irepondun LGEA Counseling Desk Officer,Counsellor Peter O Aransiola,who is also State PRO II of SCASSION in Kwara State disclosed that during their field research to over 55 secondary schools within the Council,it was discovered that the rate of social vices,sex abuses increases because many girls were lure into it because of money.
Aransiola,in the report made available to the participants stated that his team taught some of these students the dangers of anus and oral sexual intercourse and the reasons for them to abstain from immoral sex and drug abuse.
