Kwara civil defence constructs office blocks through self help
The Kwara State command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps has commissioned her new office complex, built through self help project in Ilorin, the state capital.
Prior to the construction of the office complex located at Gaa Imam area and adjacent to CocaCola bottling plant in Ilorin, the officer and men of the command used to crowd themselves in a rented apartment situated at Fate GRA, Ilorin, where operational activities were reportedly hampered.
However, several appeals made to the state government yielded desired result when Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed approved a large piece of land for the authorities of the command to build their state headquarters.
Thus, through self help of the officers and men, as their different vocational skills in carpentry, bricklaying, electrical and painting, were deployed in the construction of the office, including donation from friends of the commandant, Mr Augustine Obiekwe, within and outside the state.
Speaking with Arewa, the Kwara State commandant, Mr Augustine Obiekwe, said the new office blocks were constructed through direct labour by the officers and men of the command, adding that financing was made through voluntary contributions of the officers and men.
Obiekwe, who said the piece of land constituted security risk to the immediate community and was a deep bush when the first visit was paid to the site, added that a very big snake was killed among other dangerous animals during the construction.
"Men and officers carried head pans, handled shovels, mixed sand and practically deployed all their various skills to the achievement of the project", he said.
Also speaking on the feat achieved by the officers and men of the command during his visit to the state, the zonal commander, Zone D, Dr Ahmed Jega, commended the efforts of the command and promised to support the project in some other areas.
Dr Jega also appreciated the state government for releasing the plots of land, just as he appealed to the government to fulfill its financial pledges when its economic situation improves.
