KWHA demands statistic of primary schools teachers in rural areas
The Kwara State House of Assembly has directed its Committee on Education and Human Capital Development to furnish the house with the statistics of primary schools teachers in rural communities in the 16 local government areas of the state.
The directive was part of the resolution by the House following the adoption of a motion on notice urgent deployment of teachers to primary schools in Kaiama Local Government area of the state moved by Hon Ahmed Ibn Mohammed of Kaiama/Kemanji/Wajibe Constituency.
He said about 95 per cent of primary schools in the council lacked adequate teachers in core subjects like Mathematics, English Language, Science, Social Science and Civic Education.
He pointed out that the total number of teachers required in the council was 687 but only 365 teachers were available according to the statistics.
He said most schools with over 150 pupils have only a teacher who teaches Arabic subject.
According to him several schools were always under lock and key during working hours following the absence of teachers.
Mohammed expressed concern that the inadequacy of teachers in primary schools in Kaiama Local Government could shatter the foundation and dreams of future leaders.
The co-mover of the motion, Hon Adamu Usman of Okuta/Yashikira Constituency, observed that lack of adequate teachers in primary schools was not the only problem but infrastructural facilities were in zero condition in most rural communities.
Usman however urged the government to address the problem of infrastructure in the rural areas to encourage teachers posted to the rural communities.
Other members who contributed to the motion, lamented lack of teachers in all rural areas of the 16 local government areas of the state and called for urgent action to solve the problem.
They however blamed politicians who interfered unnecessarily on the transfer of teachers and called for caution.
The Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon Mathew Okedare who presided over the plenary while reading the resolution of the House, directed the House Committee on Education to liaise with the state Universal Basic Education Board for the data of teachers in rural areas.
He mandated the committee to report to the House by November 18.
The House urged the state governor to order comprehensive deployment of SUBEB teachers particularly in core subjects to Kaiama Local Government.
The legislators also urged the governor to give consideration to such deployment to indigenous teachers getting posted to their local government origin.
