AIG warns police against corruption
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge Zone 8 Command, Mr. Tanko Lawal, on Monday expressed the commitment of the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, to have zero tolerance for corruption and the abolition of road blocks.
Lawal, who spoke in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital during his tour of the Kwara State Police Command, said the current police management would kick out any corrupt police officer.
He stated that the IGP had abolished police road blocks and replaced it with the federal highway police patrol system, warning that any police personnel that contravened the directive would be adequately punished.
He identified other policy thrust of the present police management to include police community partnership, intelligence led policing, respect for human rights, synergy with other critical security stakeholders and welfare of police personnel.
The AIG also reiterated that the Nigerian Police had ruled out excuses for detaining a suspect for more than 24 hours to check against abuse of human rights.
He stated that the police would abide by the Nigeria's Constitution not to detain suspects for more than 24 hours.
Lawal said, "The most important thing to tell you (police officers) is that there is a wind of change all over the place from the Presidency to every facet of public life, and the police force is not an exception. There is general zero tolerance for corruption. If you are corrupt, you better think twice, turn a new leave of life or you will be arrested and if proven to be corrupt, you will be kicked out.
"Another area that is giving us more problems and that is why the present police management has insisted on the issue of road block, because that is where we have so many problems with members of the public.
"Road block is gone and is gone forever. In their places, you are aware that the Inspector-General of Police has provided vehicles to replace the road blocks. Not only for federal highway, he has also provided the fuelling and the personnel. From the zone we monitor all the commands for the full implementation of the federal highway and the road block issue. We do not want to see any roadblock."
