Insecurity: NUJ, Oke Canvass Return Of Military Checkpoints
A CHIEFTAIN of the Kwara state chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Wole Oke, has canvassed prompt return of military checkpoints to curb the renewed onslaught of the Boko Haram insurgency in the country.
Similarly, the Kogi state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently restore military checkpoints in the state to curb the deplorable security situation in the state.
Oke, who was the Leader of Kwara State House of Assembly in the Third Republic, said the rate at which members of the sect are spreading in their quest to destabilise the nation, will require urgent return of the military on the nation's roads to checkmate terrorism.
Speaking with The Guardian yesterday in Ilorin, the APC stalwart warned that though the insurgency issue remained the litmus test for the administration of Buhari, the task of curbing the excesses of the sect should be an all inclusive one.
He urged the Federal Government to treat the present security conditions in Nigeria with immediate attention, just as he recommended prompt investigation of the sponsors of the group to end the sect's lifeline.
The call by the NUJ, which was contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Lokoja yesterday, noted that the spate of robbery and kidnapping shortly after the withdrawal of the military checkpoints is not only alarming, but also disturbing.
The statement, which was signed by the acting chairman of the union, Mr Sunday Aro, and the secretary, Mr Adeiza Momoh Jimoh, added that armed bandits have taken over major highways, operating with reckless abandon.
