3m Vehicles on Nigerian Roads Have Genuine Insurance, Says NIA DG
The Director General Nigeria Insurers Association (NIA) Mr. Sunday Thomas has said reasonable success has been achieved by the Nigerian Insurance industry Data base (NIID), five years after introduction in Nigeria, as 3 million out of about 11.5million vehicles plying Nigerian roads now have genuine insurance cover.
Thomas who disclosed this while answering questions from journalists at the recent seminar for journalists held in Ilorin, Kwara state said having achieved this level of success in motor insurance business, the association is now facing the marine module still in its fight against fake insurance activities in the country.
"The marine module is another area of our interest.The second module of the NIID has been deployed. Companies are beginning to up load their covers under the marine module. We are engaging the stake holders.
Who are the stakeholders,these are the commission which is the regulator, we have been talking to the brokers, we have sought for appointment with Nigerian customs, we have talked to Chartered Institute of bankers CIBN we also find a platform to talk to committee of bankers these are some of the efforts we have put in place to eradicate fake insurance because these are the areas where they operate most," he stated.
Thomas said though the association has not reached its destination in the fight against fake motor insurance certificate, which has suffered the worst abuse in the country, he was happy that about 3 million vehicles are presently covered under the NIID compared to one million vehicles that was covered previously.
According to him the NIA is poised to ensure that fake insurance policies are totally wiped in the country, adding that the association will not rest until this is achieved.
He said that out of of 11.5million vehicles plying Nigerian roads only 3million of these vehicles have a genuine motor insurance cover, while 75 percent of these vehicles do not have verifiable insurance papers.
He promised that the association is working with relevant security agents, such as the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC); Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) and State governments to ensure that road users have genuine insurance papers.
He also disclosed that with a successful deployment of the motor module the association has fully commenced marine platform to keep fake certificates out of marine business.
To ensure the success of the marine module, he said that the association is collaborating with the stakeholders in the marine sector state and federal government to achieve its planned goal in the marine module.
