Kwara LG Workers Owed Three Months Resort to Demeaning Jobs to Survive
Some workers in Baruten Local Government Council of Kwara now engage in casual labour to earn a living due to the non-payment of their three months salaries.
A correspondent who visited the council secretariat on Wednesday, observed that only a few staff turned up for work as a result of the development.
Some workers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described their condition as pathetic.
One of the workers told NAN that he now works in a local bakery to earn a living.
He said: "How do I survive without three month salaries when I do not have another job? "Life had become unbearable for me before I came up with the idea of cleaning bread canisters at the bakery."
He, however, urged local and the state governments to find a means of paying council workers' salaries to save them from starvation.
Another worker, who had become a commercial motorcyclist, vowed never to return to work until salaries were paid.
He lamented that council workers had been relegated in government's rating, saying other categories of civil servants had long received their April salaries.
The council authority, however, blamed the development on paucity of funds from the Federation Account.
The Public Relations Officer of the council, Jubril Masene, said there was no information as to when staff salaries would be paid.
He, however, assured that the council would pay the salaries as soon as the situation improved. (NAN)
