NFF slams one year ban on two referees

Date: 2015-04-21

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has axed two match officials found wanting in the discharge of their responsibilities in the Sunshine Stars FC of Akure home game against visiting Dolphins FC of Port Harcourt on Sunday.

The NFF Referees Appointment Committee yesterday approved the recommendation from the League Management Company (LMC) for the suspension of the duo from handling any of its matches this season.

The duo, centre referee John Charles and his assistant Ogunta Matador who officiated the game between Sunshine Stars and Dolphins in Akure on Sunday were suspended for the rest of the season for their poor handling of the game which benefited the home side.

The officials had turned blind eyes to the handball by Prince Aggrey inside the box before firing home the winner in added time of the second stanza.

Two players, the goal scorer Prince Aggrey and Ebenezer Odunlami who pulled off their shirts and pants in the course of celebrating the goal were suspended for one match and fined N50, 000 each.

The LMC Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Dikko said their action was disparaging to the league and the followers of the game hence the sanction.

"The two players that pulled of their shirts and pants to celebrate the goal were suspended for one match and fined N50, 000 each as first offenders. We can not tolerate such indecent acts in our games, it was offensive to our viewers," Dikko said.

Dikko also said two other referees were adjudged the star referees of the week four for their exemplary performance in their venues.

He said referee Patrick Ishaya and Akinwale K.S who handled the Kwara United versus Heartland match in Ilorin and Kano Pillars versus Enyimba FC of Aba match in Kano were picked as the star referees of the week.
