Patients At Kaiama General Hospital Urge Health Workers to End Strike
Patients at the remodelled Kaiama General Hospital in the Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State have urged health workers in the state to end their ongoing strike.
The patients made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaiama.
They called on the health workers in the state to return to work while they engage in dialogue with government to press home their demands.
Mr Sunday Ogalla, a resident of the community, pleaded with the union to end its industrial action in the interest of the masses.
According to him, many patients are losing their lives to avoidable deaths due to the industrial action.
He, however, enjoyed government to address the demands of the workers to save the health sector from total collapse.
Mrs Aishat Mohammed also sought for an immediate end to the strike, saying the industrial action is a threat to the lives of patients.
NAN, however, reports that doctors were seen rendering skeletal service in the hospital.
Medical Doctor of the hospital, Dr Ebenezer Kehinde, explained that he engaged in skeletal services to save the lives of vulnerable patients.
"We still attend to patients since we are not members of JOHESU. We prescribe drugs so that they can buy outside because the pharmacy is also shut," he said.
The medical expert, who said he could not admit any patient because of the strike, noted that they only treat patients empirically as laboratories were not open to carry out test.
According to him, this is done to save the medical activities in the hospital from a total collapse.
