2015 - Cleric Wants Adequate Security, Incentives, for Journalists
The Bishop of St. Paul Anglican Cathedral, Omu-Aran, Kwara, Rt. Rev. Philip Adeyemo, has called for adequate protection for journalists as the nation prepares for the 2015 general elections.
Adeyemo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area, on Friday that the call became necessary in view of the hazardous nature of media profession.
He said that there were lots of expectations on journalists for adequate and reliable reportage of events ahead of the polls.
I think our men and women in the fourth estate of the realm need to be adequately protected during this transition period and beyond, in the discharge of their civic responsibilities.
This is a profession which is very demanding and which the countrymen desire lots of expectation from, especially during this political period, to furnish them with happenings as they unfold," he said.
Adeyemo decried the incessant bombings, kidnappings and ritual killings in parts of the country, saying that the events had become a source of concern to religious leaders.
It is our responsibility as religious leaders to continue to intercede on behalf of the leaders through prayers toward the growth, progress and development of the country," he said
He called on the government and relevant media regulatory agencies to formulate adequate insurance policies and incentives to improve the capacity of journalists across the country. (NAN)
