Press Release: Saraki Charges FG on Spreading Clean-Cook Stoves Nationwide
Speaking to newsmen after a monitoring and evaluation exercise to some of the beneficiaries of the Federal Government's Clean Cook-Stoves program in Ilorin West LGA of Kwara state, Saraki highlighted the health and economic implications of the traditional cooking methods during a research and interactive session that he conducted with the beneficiaries.
Many of the beneficiaries rated the Clean Cook-Stove initiative, championed by the Senator as a timely gesture that has ameliorated family cooking by reducing health dangers and economic downsides.
Miss Esther, who is one of the beneficiaries in Ilorin West LG said that the Clean Cook-Stoves initiative has improved and simplified her family's cooking processes by eliminating smoke and other unhygienic characters that accompany traditional cooking methods. She further stressed the fact that the economic and health benefits of the Clean Cookstoves project outweigh the traditional cooking methods as it is cheaper to use and maintain. She also did not forget to mention how stressful it was to fuel cooking with firewood, and how the Senator Saraki-led clean cookstoves initiative has brought succour to women and girls that are faced with the task of cooking daily.
In addition to the aforementioned, the Senator Saraki-led Senate Committee on Environment has made commitments nationally and internationally towards improving the livelihood of people through environmental hygiene and preserving our fast depleting forest resources by reducing illegal falling of trees in communities.
He has continued to support the initiative by appropriating funds to the tune of N100m naira in the 2014 appropriation Act. The committee has stressed that it believes that all Nigerians have a right to the basic amenities of life including safer and healthier methods of cooking while safe guarding their health, saving income for other productive family uses as well as combating climate change through reduced deforestation and environmental conservation.
In this regard, Saraki therefore charged the Federal Government to spread clean cookstoves across Nigeria and ensure effective implementation of provisions in the 2014 appropriation act and beyond.
