Kwara alleges poor federal presence
Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed yesterday berated the federal government for allegedly abandoning road projects in the state. He alleged that the federal government has not done anything about roads in the state in the past 10 years. Ahmed, who said this during his monthly interactive session, added that many federal roads in the state are not motorable.
Reacting to a recent comment by Minister of National Planning, Dr. Abubakar Sulaiman, that Kwara civil servants are the least paid, the governor urged the minister to concentrate on his office. "Planning ministry is a serious business where politics should not be played", he said.
He added that Kwara was one of the first states to implement the national minimum wage of N18,000, and that workers' salaries are paid as and when due "despite its inadequate federal allocation".
The governor said the state intervened in some roads in the past and that up till now, the federal government has not reimbursed it. He disclosed that the government would flag off the Kaiama/Kishi road which is another federal road in the state as soon as the rainy season is over.
