PDP, APC differ on Kwara governorship election
The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has predicted that Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed will be defeated in the 2015 governorship election in the state.
In a statement on Sunday, the Kwara State PDP Publicity Secretary, Chief Rex Olawoye, hailed the adoption of Ahmed by the All Progressives Congress as the governorship candidate of the ruling party, saying the decision would translate into a victory for the PDP.
The statement read in part, "The PDP is filled with joy as the APC has foisted a governorship candidate on their own party members for another term of office."
A leader of the APC in Kwara State, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the PDP was deluding itself by believing that it could win the forthcoming election.
He said, "The masses are with us. We have their mandate, which we have executed in line with equity, rule of law, commitment and integrity. Dedication, passion and vision are some of the virtues we have brought to bear in the Kwara political space, a reason why the people will vote massively for the APC again."
Meanwhile, a socio-cultural forum, Freedom Women Network, has charged political parties to shun violence, adding that the 2015 elections should be peaceful and devoid of electoral irregularities and violence.
In a statement by its chairperson, Mrs. Mary Arike-Alabi and Secretary, Miss Omolade Fashipe, on Sunday, the group called for women emancipation, empowerment and political advancement in Nigeria generally and Kwara State in particular.
It also urged women to participate actively in the electoral process, adding that they should not be deterred by socio-cultural or religious inhibitions.
The group also called on a former senator representing Kwara-Central senatorial district, Senator Gbemisola Saraki, to contest the 2015 governorship primary of the PDP.
It said, "This is a clarion call. We are not unmindful of the illogical cultural and religious obstacles that may be put on her way, but we assure her that the teeming women majority with active support of the ebullient youths and assistance of right-thinking men will make her sail through."
