38 await execution in Kwara

Date: 2014-09-23

No fewer than 38 convicts are on the condemned list awaiting execution, 650 inmates serving various jail terms and nine others awaiting trial in Kwara State prisons.

The Comptroller of Prisons, Kwara State command, Mr. Adebiyi, disclosed this while fielding questions from newsmen in his office.

Adebiyi said the prison authority organises workshops for its inmates in different trades to make them self-employed when they complete their jail terms.

He stated that inmates have been trained in tailoring, metal works, carpentry, shoe making, barbing, among others, stressing that the prison authority is facing challenges of inadequate tools. He explained that the prison authority has a large farm land at Lafiagi in Edu Local Government Area of the state, where inmates are being trained in food production.

He lamented that the prison command lacks internet facilities that will enable the inmate write examinations in the facility because they are not allowed to go out for lectures or examinations.

He said: "Last year, I invited the coordinator of Open University to my office and we rubbed minds. He told me that setting up such programme in this environment requires internet facility because students' registration and examinations would be conducted on line."
