Kwara Muslims canvass five-year single term for president, govs.

Date: 2014-03-27

The Kwara State Muslims on Wednesday canvassed for a single term of five years for presidents and governors.

Pioneer Grand Khadi, Kwara State Sharia Court of Appeal, Justice Abdulkadir Orire, in a media conference in Ilorin on behalf of 31 islamic organizations and muslims in the state  said such a practice would promote good governance and reduce costs of governance as well as prevent desperation of some politicians or “do or die politics.”

He reasoned that the politics of second term is often the primary source of political disputes, including, according to him, politically motivated assassinations. The media briefing was entitled, “The position of Kwara State Muslims on the ongoing national conference.”

“There is a need in the current political stage of the country for one single term of five years for the president and the governors. We advocate a single term for the two offices after which they are not entitled to contest for the same office again,” he said.

Orire also advocated parliamentary system of government, saying the system is not as wasteful as the current presidential system of government. He also called for total autonomy for the Independent National Electoral Commission. He stated that this could be achieved by granting INEC financial and appointive autonomy. He stated that the funding of the electoral body should be through budgetary allocation.

He added that appointment of principal functionaries of the body should be done by an independent body selected from the executive, legislative and judicial arms of government. He said that it should not  be left for sitting presidents or governors who may also be standing for election.

He also canvassed that the nation’s judiciary from states to the federal should be given full autonomy in staffing, finance and infrastructure.
