Elections: Kwara sets up anti-thuggery task force
This was sequel to the sudden upsurge in violent attacks, which mainly involve supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, leading to shooting and use of dangerous weapons.
It first started with the shooting of the car of the PDP governorship candidate, Senator Simeon Ajibola and the Director-General of his campaign, Deacon John Dara, alleged done by supporters of the rival APC.
Barely three days later, the convoy of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, who is contesting again for another term was reportedly attacked and the vehicle of his advanced party was shot when he went to Isapa; home town of Ajibola; his PDP rival.
Addressing a press conference in Ilorin, Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Alhaji Isiaka Gold, said the trend caused a meeting of the State Security Council where the worrisome trend became the thrust of discussion.
He disclosed that the Council came up eight resolutions among which was the setting up of an anti thuggery task force and asking the police to immediately prosecute all arrested cases of thuggery irrespective of affiliations.
Also, the council directed that all candidates for elective positions in all the parties to sign covenant with security agencies to maintain peace and order before, during and after the forthcoming elections.
The council, according to the SSG noted that thuggery and other forms of political violence perpetrated were often planned in hotels asking police to comb hotels for such illegal assemblies.
Proprietors of hotels in the state were therefore asked to watch out for the proliferations of illegal arms which may be smuggled into their hotels by lodging guests.
