Offa Council Re-Run - Buhari Wades Into Controversy
Former Head of State, Gen. Mohammadu Buhari has intervened in the controversy trailing last Saturday's re-run election in Offa council of Kwara state.
He has invited the purported Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) councillorship candidate, Mr. Afolabi Olawole who declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the election for Shawo South-West council ward and not him as declared by Kwara state electoral commission.
Buhari has invited Jimoh alongside the presiding officer for the ward, Mr. Akin Oyetunji for a "golden handshake" through a letter written on behalf of the ex-Military leader to the duo by a group known as "The Buhari Vanguard".
The duo had publicly declared that contrary to the declaration by the State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC), the APC won in the ward.
The group in the letter obtained by Weekly Trust said it had the approval of General Buhari to invite the duo for a private session with him for their "unprecedented show of courage in denouncing electoral heist in Offa".
The PDP, it would be recalled, had disowned the councillor, saying he is a member of APC having defected two years ago from the former Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) immediately after the January 2011 election.
Meanwhile, APC members continued their rally yesterday demanding for the declaration of "authentic and official" result of last Saturday rerun election in Offa council .
They have also resolved to continue to besiege the KWASIEC until their candidate, Prince Saheed Popoola, who they claimed won the election, was declared winner.
The commission had declared the PDP candidate, Prince Abdulwaheed Olanipekun as winner of the election for chairmanship and the 12 councillorship seats; the declaration which triggered massive protests from members of APC since Sunday.
