Kwara Election: PDP Blames Opposition Over Security Breach

Date: 2013-09-07

THE Kwara State Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Yemi Afolayan has alerted on an alleged ploy by “some members of the opposition” in the state to cause security breach in the state.

Afolayan, in a chat with The Guardian in Ilorin said the party would “very soon” formally inform the leadership of the state’s police command of the grand design by the people to allegedly destabilize the state.

The PDP scribe though failed to mention the names of the members of the opposition, he nevertheless alleged that they were the ones sponsoring sporadic protests at strategic locations within Ilorin the state capita after the re run elections at Offa Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

The Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC) had declared the PDP Chairmanship candidate, Segun Olanipekun, the winner of the polls.

But the All Progressive Congress, (APC), in the state claimed fraudulent practices during the polls. The chieftains of the party would therefore want the declaration of their candidate Saheed Popoola as the winner of the election.

“We are noted for peaceful co existence here in Kwara. This will not be the first time an election would be lost. But our major worries now remain the protests of the oppositioqn in Ilorin.

“Why the choice of Ilorin for protests when the election was at Offa? We know those behind the development and we are aware of their antics to destabilize Kwara. We will very soon write the Police and intimate them with the plans.”

Afolayan said as the ruling party in the state, it could not fold its hands and allow the breach of peace in Kwara, urging therefore the opposition members in the state to explore judicial option rather than protests to seek a redress over whatever is perceived as an injustice.
