Gov.Ahmed joins Lamido, others in 'save democracy' project
The rank of governors, who have taken it upon themselves to "save" the country's democracy by visiting Nigerians leaders, who are not in government has swelled, with Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfah Ahmed joining his other five colleagues.
This is coming at a time when the five northern governors, who have been meeting the country's leaders visited former Vice President, Alex Ekwueme and former Defence Minister, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma. The group had, in the past, visited former President Olusegun Obasanjo, General Ibrahim Babangida, General Abdulsalami Abubakar and former President Shehu Shagari.
This is even as Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State has declared that the advocacy visits were informed by general dissatisfaction with the current situation in the country.
Before now, only Jigawa, Kano, Niger, Sokoto and Adamawa governors had openly associated with the campaign. By last weekend, Daily Sun exclusively gathered that the Kwara State governor had joined the group. However, only four of them were able to make last weekend's meeting, as Niger and Kwara governors had gone to Saudi Arabia to perform this year's lesser Hajj.
Sources close to the two separate meetings disclosed that the governors took the same ‘Save Nigeria's Democracy,' message, which they took to other past leaders, to both Ekwueme and Danjuma.
As at Saturday night, when Daily Sun called at the Abuja residence of the Jigawa Governor, Sule Lamido, to find out if any meeting had indeed, taken place, he confirmed the meeting with Ekwueme and revealed that the one with Danjuma would hold later that night.
Asked further about the meeting with Ekwueme, Lamido simply said: "Yes, it is true that myself, Kano, Sokoto and Adamawa governors met with Chief Alex Ekwueme, our former Vice President. We were supposed to be six actually, but the Niger and Kwara States governors had gone for Umrah (lesser Hajj).
"We believe that seeing Ekwueme was very critical, because he has the clear history of how the PDP was formed. From G9, to G18 and the G34, which metamorphosed into PDP. Nobody, today has a better understanding of the philosophical formation of the PDP, which brought about today's democracy into being, like Chief Ekwueme.
"And like any other leader in Nigeria, he is equally concerned about the happenings in the country. Look, PDP is Nigeria. Therefore, we have a responsibility to build a better PDP, so we can build a better Nigeria. "We will keep talking, and we will keep consulting. Chief Ekwueme offered some useful suggestions. And we believe he is equally concerned about the current political situation in the country."
Asked further why himself and his other colleagues embarked on this campaign, Lamido said: "As a Nigerian, whether he/she is partisan or not, is he/she happy with the current situation in the country? The answer is no! Nobody is happy with most of the things happening, which are clearly and visibly wrong. Democracy has some basic characteristics which we must not ignore as Nigerians, if we must build a strong democracy in Nigeria."
Although details of the meeting with Danjuma was still sketchy as at press time, Daily Sun gathered that chief among the issues tabled before the former defence chief, was the need to ensure a united Nigeria, before and beyond 2015.
Daily Sun also gathered that the crisis of confidence within the ruling PDP was also discussed, with a view to impressing it on Danjuma and other country's leaders not to adopt a "sidon look" approach to the current political situation in Nigeria.
The group, Daily Sun learnt would continue its advocacy until "sanity" and "respect for democratic practice and principles" return to the polity.
