Kwara seeks peace in warring communities
The Kwara State Government has urged the Elerin of Erin, Oba Ganiyu Olusokun, and the Olofa of Offa, Oba Mufutau Gbadamasi, to enter into a covenant of peaceful co-existence between their communities.
The Erin and Offa communities had been engaged in recurring violence, leading to the killing of many people and destruction of properties worth billion of naira in January.
The Secretary to the Kwara State Government, Alhaji Isiaka Gold, during a post-executive media briefing on Thursday said the state exco, after considering the White Paper on the report of the judicial commission, had resolved that the two monarchs should be prevailed upon to commit themselves to respect the rule of law.
"Council resolved that the Elerin of Erin and the Olofa should be prevailed upon to harmoniously enter into a covenant of peaceful co-existence between the two communities and commit to full respect of the rule of law in the interest of long-term peaceful co-existence, development and equity," he said.
He added that the State Executive Council proscribed the Offa and Erin-Ile branches of the National Union of Road Transport Workers and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria for having been found intransigent and culpable in the immediate causes of the communal crisis between both communities.
He said, "Furthermore, government directed that Ajegunle Motor Park, Offa and Idi-Agba Motor Park, Erin-Ile, which were identified as major sources of recurring rancour between both communities are unauthorised and should therefore be closed down."
