Governor's Wife Pledges to Revive Reading Culture

Date: 2013-03-14

The wife of  Kwara governor,  Omolewa Ahmed,  on Wednesday inaugurated reading clubs in 64 public schools  across the state.

The News Agency of  Nigeria (NAN) reports  that the  initiative named,  LEAH Reading Club, is a component of  Ahmed's  LEAH Charity Foundation.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ahmed said LEAH Charity Foundation would not relent in ensuring that students in the state made reading their hobby.

"The LEAH Reading Club has a vision of building the capacity of our children to read, enjoy reading and apply what they learned from every book they read to the challenges of everyday life," she said.

Represented by Mr Lanre Bello, her Special Assistant on Administration and Strategy, Ahmed said reading had the capacity to boost the intellectual ability  of students.

She said evolving a reading culture was the collective responsibility of government and stakeholders.

"We have a joint responsibility to nurture our children  into responsible adulthood, to help them open up their minds and hearts to new ideas through books," she said.

Ahmed appealed to principals of the pilot schools to collaborate with her foundation to ensure success of the programme.

NAN  reports that 640 students were expected to be pioneer members of the club, with 10 from each of the 64 participating schools. (NAN)
