Kwara govt denies link with judicial workers' strike

Date: 2012-03-07

Kwara State government has said that it was not involved in the strike action by the judiciary workers in the state over the reinstatement of the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Raliat Elelu-Habeeb, by the Supreme Court.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Wahab Oba, which was made available to journalists in Ilorin, stated that the state government did not call out the workers on strike and could not logically call it off.

The statement read thus: "The attention of the Kwara State government has been drawn to a statement by the Ilorin branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), directing "the state government, being the employer of the members of the striking Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), to call off the strike action and find solution to the crisis.

Government wishes to state as follows; it did not call out the workers on strike and cannot logically call it off; that government does not support nor aid the strike; that government respects, accepts and has fully implemented the judgment of the Supreme Court"

It said also that the "Government through various stakeholders, including the media, had appealed to the striking workers to call off the strike in the interest of justice and peace and that government commends efforts of eminent jurists in the state to resolve the impasse"

The NBA, Ilorin branch, had described the Judiciary workers' strike in Kwara State as illegal and an action without effect in the face of law.
