Kwara South Traditional Rulers Endorse Igbomina Bloc for 2027 Senatorial Seat
Traditional rulers and stakeholders in Kwara South Senatorial District have endorsed the Igbomina bloc to produce the next senator representing the district in the 2027 general elections.
The position was announced on Monday by the Chairman of the Igbomina Traditional Rulers Forum and Olupo of Ajase-Ipo, Oba Ismail Yahaya, shortly after a meeting of traditional rulers held at his palace in Ajase-Ipo.
The monarch appealed to President Bola Tinubu, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and other political stakeholders to ensure the sustenance of the long-standing rotational arrangement among the three blocs that make up Kwara South Senatorial District.
It would be recalled that the incumbent senator representing the district and Deputy Senate Leader, Lola Ashiru, is from the Offa/Ibolo bloc and is currently serving his second term in the Senate.
Speaking on behalf of the Igbomina bloc, which comprises Ifelodun, Isin and Irepodun Local Government Areas, Oba Yahaya stated that the district had enjoyed peace, unity and political stability over the years through an unwritten zoning arrangement involving the Igbomina, Ekiti and Ibolo blocs.
He commended President Tinubu and Governor AbdulRazaq for their leadership and developmental initiatives at both the national and state levels, while pledging continued support for their administrations.
"As a people and as an institution, we appreciate the efforts of President Tinubu and Governor AbdulRazaq in advancing national and state development. We urge them to continue working in the interest of Nigerians and Kwarans," the monarch said.
Oba Yahaya argued that political records since the return to democratic rule in 1999 support the claim that it is the turn of the Igbomina bloc to occupy the senatorial seat.
According to him, the Ekiti bloc produced Senator Simeon Ajibola, who represented the district for about 11 years, while the Ibolo bloc produced Senator Rafiu Ibrahim, who served one term of four years, and the incumbent Senator Ashiru, who would have completed two terms, amounting to eight years, by 2027.
He noted that the combined tenure of the Ibolo bloc would amount to 12 years by the end of Ashiru's tenure, while the Igbomina bloc had only produced Senator Makanjuola Ajadi, who served for approximately five years.
"Based on the existing rotational arrangement and in the interest of fairness, equity and justice, it is the turn of the Igbomina bloc to produce the next senator for Kwara South in 2027," he stated.
The traditional ruler recalled that stakeholders from across the senatorial district, at a meeting held in November 2025, unanimously endorsed the position that the next senator should emerge from the Igbomina bloc.
He therefore appealed to President Tinubu, Governor AbdulRazaq and other political leaders in the state to support the demand in order to preserve the unity, harmony and peaceful coexistence that have characterised the district over the years.
"This position represents the collective view of the Igbomina Traditional Rulers Forum and stakeholders across Kwara South Senatorial District," Oba Yahaya added.
The monarchs expressed optimism that adherence to the rotational arrangement would further strengthen political stability, inclusiveness and cohesion within the district ahead of the 2027 elections.
