Adebayo Family Postpones Annual Oke Onigbin Get-Together
The family of the late Chief Cornelius Adebayo, in collaboration with the Committee on the Annual Oke Onigbin Get-Together, has announced the postponement of the event originally scheduled for the first week of January 2026.
The organisers stated that the decision followed a careful assessment of the prevailing security challenges across parts of Kwara State, as well as recent incidents that have deeply impacted the public mood.
The committee noted that beyond the emotional weight following the burial of the revered leader, Chief Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, in October 2025, the persistent insecurity in Kwara South and Kwara North has become a major concern. They highlighted that recent weeks have seen the abduction and killing of several citizens, including traditional rulers, farmers, and other residents.
"These tragic incidents have created a sombre atmosphere across the state and call for sensitivity, restraint, and collective reflection," the statement read.
The family and the organising committee emphasised that the postponement serves as a mark of solidarity with families who are grieving or still awaiting the safe return of abducted loved ones. They urged that this period be used for reflection and to show compassion toward the affected communities.
While offering prayers for the souls of the deceased and the safe release of those still in captivity, the organisers reaffirmed their support for the people in the affected areas as they navigate these ongoing challenges.
The statement also called on Kwarans to remain united in supporting the Federal Government, the Kwara State Government, and security agencies in their efforts to restore peace and stability across the state. It further reaffirmed support for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing ongoing efforts in tackling insecurity and achievements in agriculture, infrastructure, the economy, and technology.
Reiterating their progressive ideals, the organisers said they remain committed to the values of progressivism as championed by the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and exemplified by Chief Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo.
They expressed hope that security conditions would improve significantly, allowing the progressive family to reconvene by Easter, when circumstances are expected to be more conducive for meaningful engagement.
