Kwara Kiddies League Hailed as Key Pipeline for Future Super Eagles Stars
The Kwara Kiddies League (KKL), a grassroots youth football initiative, is fast gaining recognition as a key pipeline for the development of future players for Nigeria's national teams.
Football stakeholders have hailed the league's structure and talent production, predicting that KKL alumni will soon feature prominently at the highest levels of the sport.
At the grand finale of the 2025 KKL season held in Ilorin on Sunday, Coach Paul Odeh, Technical Officer of the league and former Technical Director of the Kwara Football Academy (KFA), praised the standard of play on display. He described the league as exceptional, noting that the organisation, discipline, and development focus were rarely seen at the grassroots level in Nigeria.
"With what I have seen here, KKL is a huge blessing to the state. It has the potential to put Kwara in the national spotlight. The improvements year after year are impressive, and if sustained, the national team could be dominated by players from this league within the next five years," Odeh stated.
He further highlighted the success of former KFA players abroad as a testament to the quality of talent emerging from the state, noting that one former academy player was already heading to Chelsea, underlining the global recognition of local training standards.
Organised by the Taiwo Awoniyi Foundation, KKL combines football development with education and character formation. Speaking through his elder brother, Julius Awoniyi, the Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi emphasised that the league was more than just a football competition.
"We are not merely producing footballers; we are nurturing future leaders. The league instils discipline, responsibility, and a sense of purpose in young boys," Julius Awoniyi said.
The league's Chief Operating Officer, Ibrahim Jato, explained that KKL was designed as a long-term developmental programme, starting with players aged 12. Following a six-year developmental framework aligned with FIFA standards, players are expected to mature, develop technical and tactical skills, and be ready for professional football by the age of 18. The initiative has also received strong support from the Kwara State House of Assembly, with Hon. Rukayat Shittu, Chairperson of the House Committee on Sports, commending the organisers for keeping young people engaged in constructive activities.
The 2025 season concluded with a closely contested final between Kwara Football Academy and Gaa Akanbi Kids, which KFA won 1–0 courtesy of a goal by Kamaldeen Jimoh. With the victory, KFA claimed their fourth consecutive league title, having also won in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Awards and cash prizes ranging from N100,000 to N200,000 were presented to outstanding players and officials. From its inception as the Kwara U-12 YEG League, KKL has expanded to feature 14 teams competing in a home-and-away format, completing 182 matches over 26 weeks, thereby strengthening grassroots football development and nurturing the next generation of Nigerian footballers.
