Farmer Accused of Attempting to Exhume Missing Labourer's Remains in Baruten LGA
Farmer Haruna Umar has been apprehended for allegedly attempting to exhume the remains of a farm labourer, Gunu, in Taberu, Okuta District of Baruten Local Government Area (LGA), Kwara State.
According to Daily Trust, Gunu had been employed by another farmer, Halidu Yakubu, before his disappearance. Despite efforts to trace the missing labourer, no leads were found.
The case took a dramatic turn when Yakubu noticed the suspect digging suspiciously near a farm, leading to Umar's arrest. Residents speculate the motive behind the alleged grave disturbance, though no further details were disclosed.
Daily Trust reported the incident, underscoring concerns over safety and accountability in rural farming communities.
"He accosted him and after a back-and-forth, the suspect admitted that he was about to exhume the corpse of the deceased, who was killed and buried there," the source said.
The spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Tuesday, adding that it was a case of culpable homicide.
She said a hoe and stick used by the suspect to dig the grave were recovered from the scene.
"Umar and another suspect, Aminu Gona, were later arrested in connection with the killing and they have confessed to the act. A third suspect, known by the nickname 'Focuse,' is said to be on the run.
"Efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspect are ongoing and the arrested suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations," she added.
