Kwara Swears in New Administrators for Offa and Oyun LGs
The Kwara State Deputy Governor, Elder Peter Kishira has sworn in two sole administrators for Offa and Oyun local government areas.
The new executives were charged to take quick action and quell the boundary disputes in the communities. They are also to provide necessary support to the security agents to help restore lasting peace, law and order to the two communities.
The State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed on Monday announced the immediate suspension of Offa and Oyun Local Government councils for three months following communal clashes which claimed lives and properties worth millions of naira between the two communities.
While swearing in the sole administrators, Elder Kishira pointed out that the restoration of peace and harmony in the two communities should be the focus and priority of the sole administrators and warned them against being one sided in an effort to curb the incessant crisis.
He described the task before the two men as challenging and urged them to bring their wealth of experience to bear in order not to betray the confidence reposed in them by government.
He also warned them to avoid the mistakes committed by the former chairmen who did not take proactive measure in combating the crisis at early stage before degenerating to wanton destruction of lives and property.
The sole administrator of Offa, Ishaq Abubakar assured of their readiness to fully restore peace to the two communities and thanked the government for the confidence reposed in them to serve.
The Kwara State Governor, Dr Abdulfatah Ahmed attributed the suspension of the councils officials to their inability to effectively manage the motor parks in the two communities which precipitated the earlier phase of the inter-communal violence.
He revealed this on Tuesday when the management of Nigeria Navy School of Health Sciences paid him a courtesy call to seek greater cooperation with the state on boosting security efforts of the state government.
“On the premise of not been able to manage the parks which are largely guided by bye laws at the local government levels, the councils felt short of expectations in their responsibilities to maintain law and order and in ensuring the safety of lives and property”, he explained.
Governor Ahmed added that the suspension of the councils was also a signal to all and sundry that laws are meant to be complied with and that those charged with the responsibility of implementing laws must always be proactive.
He assured the communities that nobody found guilty of sponsoring the violence will be spared of the full wrath of the law.
