Matriculation Turns Bloody as Cultists Strike at Kwara Poly

1 shot dead, scores injured Confusion enveloped the Kwara State Polytechnic campus, Ilorin, Friday when people suspected to be cultists lay siege on the institution and shot dead one person believed to be a student of the institution.

Eyewitness account has it that the incident which occurred shortly after the matriculation ceremony happened in front of the Institute of Basic and Applied Sciences (IBAS), where some students were gathered for a party in honour of the new students. According to the account, a group of young men pulled through the crowd and shot at their victims, one of whom died instantly, while the other escaped with bullet wound.

The assailants were said to have brazenly carried corpse of their slain victim with them as they left the scene of the incident.

The occurrence, as revealed, caused a stampede with students scampering for safety, thereby leaving in its wake, scores of injured students.

When contacted on phone last night, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Yunus Abdulkadir, denied knowledge of the incident.

Also, when contacted on phone last night, Kwara Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Fabode Olufemi, asked our reporter to call back on Monday (today).

Meanwhile, the Polytechnic has matriculated 7,000 students with a charge to them to be disciplined and law abiding.

The Rector of the institution, Alhaji Mas'ud Elelu, in his remarks, enjoined the new students to shun social vices in order to succeed in life.
