Kwara Sports Commission Chairman Advocates Mandatory Sports Facilities for Schools
According to Daily Trust, the Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Bola Magaji, has called for legislation that would require schools to have sporting facilities as a condition for approval.
Magaji made this statement during the second day of the third-quarter review of the ministerial briefing, which took place in Il?rin. He highlighted the lack of sports facilities in schools as one of the key issues affecting sports development in the state, despite the government's renewed focus on the sector.
“For some of us that went to school in the late 50s and 60s, we know the situation then as schools had fields for sports.
“But I can assure you that 95 percent of schools in Kwara State now lack fields for sporting activities and that is the problem that sports is having in the state.
“I attended Government Secondary School, Il?rin, the only sporting facility we lacked then was that for swimming. But go there now, they have built houses on these fields.
“So, solving the problem is a social responsibility for all of us. The state government is doing its best by providing the necessary facilities.
“Maybe there should be a recommendation that no school should be established without sporting facilities,” he said.
Speaking on the slow start of Kwara United to the league, the former squash champion said the team is making progress.
“Before the coming of this administration, Kwara United went to relegation after every other season. But since this government took over in the last five years, that has not happened again because of the efforts of the governor. And we are ready to consolidate on that,” said Magaji.
