Zoonotic Disease: Kwara State Receives 330,400 Doses of Anthrax Vaccines to Combat Disease Outbreak
According to Report from Kwara State Government Facebook page, In a significant stride towards eradicating anthrax disease, the Kwara State Government has obtained 330,400 doses of anthrax vaccines from the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) via the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
Expressing gratitude for the collaborative effort, Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, lauded the Federal Government and L-PRES Project for their commitment to ensuring an anthrax-free state and Nigeria at large.
Mrs. Thomas pledged the state's dedication to effectively utilize the vaccines, emphasizing the importance of state-wide sensitization campaigns targeting livestock farmers and other stakeholders in the livestock value chain.
Similarly, Mrs. Funke Sokoya, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, commended the federal government's initiative in disease eradication and emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation among relevant bodies to prevent disease outbreaks.
Dr. Abdulateef Olugbon, the Director of Veterinary Services at the Kwara State Ministry of Agriculture, appealed to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, through L-PRES Project Office, for logistical support to overcome challenges hindering the administration of over 30,000 doses of anthrax vaccines.
Acknowledging the timely delivery of the vaccines, Mr. Olusoji Oyawoye, the State Project Coordinator (SPC), expressed optimism that the gesture would facilitate the successful implementation of the L-PRES animal health sub-component in the state.
Dr. Abubakar Sidiq, the team lead, disclosed that the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the L-PRES National Coordination office, has initiated the production of 13 million doses of anthrax vaccines for distribution nationwide, with 330,400 doses allocated to Kwara State. He highlighted the coordination efforts between the L-PRES Project Office and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture in providing necessary inputs and logistics for vaccine administration.
"National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI) notified the National Office of L-PRES that the vaccines were ready to be delivered to the states, and we are here to officially handover these vaccines with the hope that they will be used judiciously and with the target of having a nation free of anthrax", Sidiq said.
