KWSG Bans Degree Program at State Owned Colleges of Education

Date: 2012-12-08

The Kwara State Government has directed its Colleges of Education in Ilorin, Oro and Lafiagi to discontinue all degree and outreach courses and focus on training teachers for basic education level, even as it has approved the setting up of committees to look into the debt profile of over N152m of the College of Education, Ilorin.

Similarly, it has also approved the setting up of a committee to check the appropriateness of re-introducing the IJMB programme in the Colleges of Education, Oro and Lafiagi without losing focus of their primary mandate.

Addressing the press yesterday on the resolution of the council meeting, Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Isiaka Gold, said that the council has also considered the draft of white Paper on the report of the visitation Panels to the three state-owned Colleges of Education in Ilorin, Oro and Lafiagi.

"The striking feature of the reports was falsification of admission enrolment, unauthorised borrowing, high-handedness and power tussle within the rank and file of the institutions' authorities.

"Council also directed the three colleges to discontinue all degree and outreach courses and focus on training teachers for basic education level.

"Meanwhile, the enabling Laws of the Colleges are to be reviewed in line with the dynamics of the contemporary world," the SSG said.
