2 corp members offer scholarship to students

TWO corps members serving in Ilorin,Kwara State, Abiodun Abesin and Onyeacho Lilian, have provided scholarship, learning materials, sports facilities and equipments in conjunction with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Ilorin, to pupils of Olokuta primary and secondary schools, Olokuta in Ilorin East Local Government Area of the state.

The two outgoing corps members, who are graduates of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State and Abia State University, Uturu, Abia State, studied Accountancy and Geography/Planning respectively, and were able to pay tuition fees for fifteen pupils of the school and provided learning materials worth several thousands of naira for their use.

Also presented to the school were volley-ball court, football pitch, jerseys, footballs and other sporting kits.

Speaking at the presentation of the materials, the corps members said the project, which formed part of their personal community development projects, was informed by the pressing need of the community and pupils who are the beneficiaries, adding that many of the residents of the community could not afford the school fees and other necessary educational materials despite the fact that the school is the only one in the entire community.

The corps members, who said education is a means to alleviate poverty and engineer social change, added that there is a need to encourage and equip the children to usher in a bright and better future for them.

They also said that sporting activities enhance mental and physical development of youth, adding that judicious utilisa-tion of the sporting equipments and facilities could enable the beneficiaries participate in government-organised sports activities leading to national and international competition.

Also speaking, the Depot Manager of the NNPC, Ilorin, Mr. Ojo Adebayo, said the present generation owed future ones a lot, adding that all needed resources to make them responsible citizens should be put at their disposal.

He also said that the donations by the corps members would impact on the children to carry on in life, adding that the corporation was committed to assisting development of all citizens in the country, towards making the country a better place for all.
