Kwara policeman detained for slapping brothers at checkpoint
A police inspector, Aigbobahi Ogbemudia, has been put on departmental orderly room trial by the Kwara State Police Command for allegedly assaulting two brothers on Unity Road, Ilorin, the state capital.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Tuesday Assayomo, ordered that the inspector be made to face orderly room trial following a case of alleged manhandling and slapping of two brothers, Adeleke Ridwan and Adeleke Habeeb.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the brothers were accosted by the police anti-robbery team during a routine check when the police inspector, who was a member of the team, subjected them to torture.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ajayi Okasanmi, in a statement, said the police inspector had no right to beat the brothers even if they were suspects under investigation.
The statement read, “The attention of the Kwara State Police Command has been drawn to a video currently trending on some social media platforms, where a young man, later known as Adeleke Ridwan, aged 22, and his elder brother, Adeleke Habeeb, cloth sellers in the Challenge area of Ilorin, were accosted by men of the Kwara State Command's anti-robbery team along Unity Roundabout, Ilorin, for a routine check.
“The boys were manhandled and slapped by a member of the anti-robbery team, identified as Inspector Aigbobahi Ogbemudia.
“The command wishes to state emphatically that the policeman has no right to hit or assault any citizen, regardless of his status, even as a suspect under investigation.
“For the single reason of lack of discretion on the part of members of the police team, the Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, CP Tuesday Assayomo psc(+), has directed that the erring policemen, who have been arrested and identified by the victims, be detained and departmental orderly room trial commenced immediately and appropriate punishment apportioned accordingly. This is to serve as a deterrent to others.”
